He loves Pokemon, dinosaurs, and every color. He was only two when his little brother was diagnosed with cancer, but proved to be a fierce advocate. Patrick Age 4Diagnosis: High Risk Neuroblastoma Patrick was diagnosed with stage 4, high risk Neuroblastoma the week before he turned 2. It was an intense and difficult battle for 16 months as he underwent nearly every kind of cancer treatment (chemo, two stem cell transplants, radiation, and immunotherapy) but he completed treatment and has thankfully been in remission since January 2022. Somehow, he has only fond memories of the hospital and all who cared for him, and he asks regularly when he gets to go back. Now, he is a silly, affectionate, wise little four-year-old who is thriving in preschool. He loves trucks (specifically garbage trucks), Philadelphia sports and all things Philadelphia, playing with his little sister, and spending time with his awesome grandparents. We’ve been blessed to participate in many Kisses for Kyle offerings and look forward to all the fun to come! Anna Age 2Super Sib Anna puts the color in our world! She was born in unusual times: a pandemic, but also 6 weeks after her brother’s cancer diagnosis. Her first year was in no way typical as she visited the hospital often, spent a lot of time with her grandparents, and learned quickly that she needed to just go with the flow. Anna is a silly firecracker who is always up to some kind of shenanigans. She loves playing with her brother, jumping in the bouncy house, and running as fast as she can from A to B. Thanks to Kisses for Kyle, she has had so many incredible experiences as a 2 year old that many adults don’t even get to experience, and we are so grateful! Veronica Age 18Super Sib Veronica is the typical big sister, picks fights with her little brothers, but loves them more than she lets on. Israel is now a healthy eight year old athlete who trains with a former NFL player. He loves playing all sports however, plans to play for the Philadelphia Phillies professionally one day. When Israel is not playing sports, he is building things and spending time with his family. Family truly is the most important thing to Israel. Guy Age 9Diagnosis: Osteosarcoma of the right humerus Guy lost his dad to cancer when he was just 8 months old. Then, at the age of 5, he faced his own diagnosis. After complaining of a sore arm he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He went through just under a year of chemotherapy and more surgeries than we can keep count of. Through all of it, his crazy, silly, smart little self has stayed so positive! They were able to to use his own fibula as a bone graft to replace the upper humerus bone that was removed! Unfortunately with that, he's dealt with quite a few broken arms, but it hasn't slowed him down! He's excelling in school, LOVES to read and learn about Greek mythology. In the past year he's also gotten into musical theater and is crushing it! His voice and dance moves are second to none! He's a complete fish in the summer, swimming any chance he gets and is an avid Cornhole player. Luckily, he's very into video games and loves playing his switch. That came in super handy to pass the time in the hospital! We are very fortunate to live close to CHOP and to have such an amazing team! Keep an eye out for him on Broadway in a few years, this kid is going places! Gavin Age 13Diagnosis: Osteosarcoma of the right humerus Gavin is a loving, caring and strong child. Gavin Age 8Diagnosis: Ewing Sarcoma Gavin was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in January 2022. He underwent 14 cycles of chemo, 10 rounds of radiation, and had to have a below knee amputation. Through all this, he does not let cancer define him. He loves being "normal" - he loves dinosaurs, science, and Star Wars. Since joining back at school this January, he's been "just another kid." He even won student of the month his first month back in school. Ella Age 6Super Sib Ella was very concerned when she learned that her big brother had cancer and would subsequently need a below knee amputation. They had a heart to heart about it, and as scared as she was, she was extremely supportive. She also made it a point to educate her classmates and teachers on limb differences. She brought in a coloring book to her class. And she celebrates limb differences - when she sees people in person or on videos! Mia Age 10Super Sib Mia is the best big sister. When her brother was diagnosed with cancer, she was extremely flexible about reducing her activities outside of school since mom and dad were going to be at the hospital every other week. After treatment, she's been protective of him as he ventured back to school. She showed him back around and escorts him to class each morning. Dalton Age 20 Diagnosis: Hodgkin’s lymphoma stage 4 When Dalton learned that he had stage 4 cancer, he was silent, looking at the ground and remained calm as he processed what he was hearing. After a minute he looked up, nodded and said “Ok, finally we have an answer. Now the doctors will treat my cancer - I will rock a beanie cap.” The previous 9 months had been painful, stressful and discouraging as Dalton was continuously misdiagnosed from being told he had bronchitis, allergies, flu and our all time favorite- it’s in your head and you’re fine. Still to this day, Dalton’s acceptance of his diagnosis was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. As a mom who is a licensed psychotherapist by profession who specializes in trauma, this acceptance left me speechless. Dalton faced every 2 week on, 2/3 weeks off, chemotherapy treatment in patient at DuPont Children’s Hospital with no complaints. Really. To the point I had the hospital psychiatrist speak with him to make sure he wasn’t in denial! Nurses on the oncology floor loved him as a patient; not because he was charming or engaging but rather because he was so easy and never complained. Dalton became septic at one point from an infected port insertion and he was very sick. I have never been so scared in my life yet Dalton remained confident that he would survive. I could go on and on about the challenges of his treatment Dalton faced, yet it was his resilience, confidence and strength that forced me to remain hopeful. It wasn’t until he had completed treatment did Dalton disclose that chemotherapy sucked- his words. And he added, as he had many times before, no one said life is always going to be fair. You just have to deal with the hand you were dealt. And deal he has! Dalton missed a year of school, the tenth grade, yet he accepted this without hesitation and said it was more important that he focus on beating his cancer then Math or English. Dalton graduated from high school with students he really didn’t know as the kids he grew up with/went to school with had already graduated the previous year and moved on with their lives. Dalton walked proudly in his graduation ceremony donning two cords- one for academic honors as he graduated with a GPA of 97 and the other cord was for completing the computer science academy. Today Dalton is attending Rowen University on a full academic scholarship and has a dual major in computer science and mathematics. His quest for knowledge and intelligence supersedes anything I can comprehend. Am I simply being a doting/bragging parent? I don’t think so. You see, Dalton had an IEP prior to his cancer diagnosis due to anxiety and a processing disorder. After his treatment ended, Dalton participated in a neurological/psychological study by DuPont. One of the cancer drugs supposedly causes a decrease in one’s IQ and ability to process, etc.. Dalton scored exceptionally high on all parts of the testing. The doctors said it is as if he never had the chemo drug. We (the doctors and myself) have wondered almost how he came out of treatment cognitively superior than when he started? I have no answers. Dalton doesn’t like attention around his cancer diagnosis as he doesn’t want anyone to consider him in any way special for enduring a diagnosis he had no control over receiving or beating. Dalton politely yet firmly refused many acts of kindness from charitable organizations stating he is not a charity case nor did he believe he deserved these acts of kindness so many offered. He would state there are many others who face more serious problems and are more deserving of these gifts; and again would state that having cancer was simply something that happened during one point in his life and does not define him. As his mom, I can say that the kindness and generosity of Kisses For Kyle and the support I received from them made the difference for me to find the strength and courage to be present for Dalton- for that I am eternally grateful far more then any words I can begin to write on paper. This is not to say that Dalton didn’t appreciate the many Phillies games we were given the opportunity to go to, along with other wonderful opportunities provided by Kisses For Kyle! He certainly is! It was those times that we as a family got to feel some joy and forget about cancer for a moment. There are so many people who unconditionally supported us during this time. I don’t know what I would do without my mother who is a second mom to my kids and although she won’t admit it out loud, Dalton is her heart and she treats him like a prince. Dalton’s father stayed with him at the hospital at times when I needed to be at home with our younger daughter’s. Although we were divorced, Dalton’s cancer enabled us to really focus on the kids well being as our priority. And then there was the numerous support of friends and those we never knew before who became friends. That list is beyond endless and we are blessed beyond measure to have had each and every one of them during this time. My hope is one day Dalton will an advocate for childhood cancer and share his support as a survivor to others going through cancer treatments currently. He is 20 years old and trying to move on with his life- without cancer… something he is well aware many others aren’t afforded. Meanwhile, I have embraced his strength and found healing in giving back to other parents by adding families of cancer patients to my speciality in private practice. Cancer changes every families norm to a new norm. Not one of us wanted or asked for this journey we were faced with. Yet I continue to draw strength from Dalton and remember that life isn’t always fair and we all are doing our best to deal. And we might even rock a beanie cap doing so! Sarah Age 18Super Sib Sarah is currently in her first year at Rutgers University studying Nursing and she will graduate with her Bachelor of Science. Sarah is on a full academic scholarship as well. Sarah also teaches dance class at her former dance studio where she dance for since she was 3 years old. Sarah was 14 years old when Dalton was diagnosed with cancer and her world was turned upside down as well. Sarah had to go for weeks at a time without mom being at home, giving comfort many nights to her little sister who missed mommy, all the while missing mom as well and feeling very scared to lose her first best friend in life- her brother Dalton. Sarah is equally beautiful inside and out, with an outgoing personality and genuine kindness that only her big brother can test at times! lol! Dalton won’t admit it easily how much he loves Sarah, yet he gladly helps her with her homework and would go to bat for her in an instant if needed. Sarah wrote about her experience of her brother having cancer for her admissions essay for Rutgers nursing program as it plays a significant role in her desire to become a nurse. She will be a priceless addition to the field of nursing one day. Ally Age 15Super Sib Ally is 15 years old and is a Freshman at Paul VI High School. Ally was in the 4th grade when her brother Dalton was diagnosed with cancer. Ally is very close to her brother and Dalton has always had a soft side when it comes to Ally. Dalton is fiercely protective of Ally, although they have a tendency to tease one another to no end! Ally is the joker of the family yet also very quiet until you get to know her. Dalton and Ally share this trait of being reserved. Make no mistake though, Ally is the chatterbox at home! In the fourth grade, Ally was given an assignment about what she would do if she found a pot of gold. Her paper speaks to her compassionate, loving and caring heart. Question Ally was asked in 4th grade: “If you found a pot of gold, you would be a very rich person. What would you do with the money?” Ally’s response: “If I found a pot of gold, I would donate it to charity for people who have cancer or just for people who are very sick. I would donate to them because when they're done treatment, they can go on vacation or buy stuff that they always wanted!” Charlotte Age 7 Diagnosis: B-ALL Diagnosed in July 2020, she just finished treatment in November 2022.
